Since 2014, the O'Donnell team around the founders August Ullrich and Philip Morsink have been producing extraordinary spirits based on wheat brandy.

During a road trip through the United States, the two came across thefascinating history of the "Moonshines", the bootlegger of the American Prohibition era. Back home, August and Philip decided to bring the infamous drink back to life. Their schnapps production was less secretive than it was during the American Prohibition period, but - at first - the few glasses of schnapps were mainly sold to friends and acquaintances - O'Donnell Moonshine was born.

The unique taste was convincing, so that, due to the small quantities at the beginning, the production could be increased bit by bit. To this day, our moonshines are developed with great attention to detail and are reminiscent of the illegal schnapps distillery of the 1920s.

The origin of moonshine lies in the first third of the 20th century in the USA - the time of prohibition. In 1919, the manufacture and sale of alcohol was banned, with devastating consequences. Unemployment was followed by crime and corruption. Because the population resisted the law and rebelled by continuing to distil the liquor illegally on farms, selling it to smugglers called "bootleggers" and serving "speakeasys" in speakeasies.

So drinking continued and the smuggling gangs had power over the alcohol business. The consequences for the state were significant tax losses and so the law was ultimately overturned by then President Roosevelt.

The leader of one of these gangs was Edward "Spike" O'Donnell (1890-1962) - our namesake. He led the South Side Gang in Chicago and fought bloody clashes with their adversaries during the Chicago Beer Wars. Although Spike was a ruthless gangster, quality was always important to him, which is why he stuck to German-born producers.
